not so constant commenting

Filed under: discussion — UndyedYarnpire @ 2:42 pm

I have decided that I really need to comment on other people’s posts more. I like reading all the stuff people are doing and seeing the interesting ideas everyone else is exploring. I especially like seeing what does and does not work for other people—- though I find that preference frequently unsatisfied because all other knitters are absolutely perfect and never ever struggle with new skills or patterns or materials.

Commenting on Blogger based posts is really irksome. I have OpenID working in Firefox and Chrome (but which was an enormous hassle in Opera), but there is no way to get comment responses emailed back unless I give them my gmail/blogger ID instead. But clicking that sends people to a non-existent Blogger blog. I know people without wordpress.com accounts have similar issues commenting on my stuff— but if you really like me you could sign up to get all comments on this blog delivered via RSS. Sometimes I paste the reply into an email, but new commenters freak out and most of them never comment again.

Several of my friends cannot be bothered to respond to comments.  I guess I understand that “I deserve to be worshiped” attitude  for big name people, but even some of them do a better job than those particular friends.  So I have this belief that people who want comments have to respond to them in some way. I really do want comments because I do not want this to be me shouting into the ether and waiting to see if it echoes.

I go through commenting phases. I hate to admit it, but my ability to leave nice comments drops off with how many bitter experiences I have had with other people lately.

If you have been to Yarn School, I could definitely use some encouraging comments.

(yes, this was vastly edited.)

  1. I tend to swing the other direction- usually if I don’t respond to a comment, it’s because they haven’t left their email address. But maybe that’s me.

    • I seem to be requiring email addresses before comments are accepted. (There were a number of options and I tried to go with a “middle ground”.) Nothing says those are valid email addresses, of course.

Now that comments are threaded on wordpress.com, I prefer replying in place. Unthreaded comments quash dialogue and seem to encourage taking a discussion elsewhere.

      • Part of me wishes that blogger required email addresses. *sigh*
