Stitches West 2011: Thursday’s child has far to go.

This is a list of vendors at Stitches who are offering Thursday night specials. If you patronize them on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you will be paying more than other people and getting less selection:

From this thread: http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/stitches-west-2011/1521105/

Alpenglow Yarn / Ranch of the Oaks / Little Red Bicycle #1048
Knotty Knitters Calendar (sold by XRX itself)
Ellen’s Wooly Wonders #1445
Faerie Mountain Fibers #1040
Twisted Sunshine Designs #1146

added later:

The Fine Needle #718

I have blacked those places off my copy of the market map because I do not want to pay more than the supposedly fair price the vendor has chosen.

Admittedly those were not places I have highlighted, so it would not be a loss to me, but I will probably refer back to this list so I do not accidentally patronize them in the future either.

This Thursday night sale basically says, “We treat some people specially and you are not one of those people. We would prefer to do business with other people than you. Please go elsewhere.” So I plan to abide by that request and take my money elsewhere, forever.

Bijou Basin Ranch has coupons on their website, so you will pay more if you do not pre-prepare, but they are at least good for the whole show and for anyone. (#602 – 700) I would feel less put upon if I could “mention their website” or a special code word and get the discount, but that is because I cannot print at home so self-printed coupons are a huge hassle. Pico Accuardi Dyeworks is running specials throughout the show (#1144).

Last year I asked if there was anyone reading here who wanted to accompany me to Stitches West on the Friday market day. I have never gone with anyone else. This year I invited people from the learn to knit group where I volunteer and no one wants to come with me. (One woman does want a ride there if I am going, but did not see the invitation as being to a social outing with me as her friend.)  If you want to accompany me, please do speak up. Email, Rav PM, or comment here. If you know me, feel free to call too. I am seriously considering not going. I have only three booths highlighted and I could just as easily order from their websites later. Between gas and entry fee and lunch, staying home would more than cover any shipping costs. Plus I need nothing. I still have untouched things I bought at my first Stitches in 2008.  It would be different if I was going with someone else and doing something social and fun. Many of the comments in the Stitches West group talk about how great it is to meet other knitters and make lots of friends. I do not think I have spoken to anyone who is not a vendor, ever, at the show. It usually seems like everyone travels in groups of their own friends and have no need of conversation with strangers.

  1. I’m not going—we’ll be out of town. That makes three ridesharing offers I’ve declined this year. :/

    • Ah, but I was hoping for more than a ridesharing companion.

No worries, we have interacted for more than 5 years without so much as meeting for coffee; I no longer have expectations that will change.

      • Were I going, I’d definitely say hello, at least. Whether I wandered around with others at the event would depend on which areas they and I wanted to see….

Given my random stretches of (un)availability, it seems simplest to keep expectations on an even keel. Maternity leave is the first time in years when I’ve sort of been able to have daytime coffee with anyone; it’s over in a few weeks.

        • (“Sort of” because the baby would have to come with.)

  2. I’m not sure that you know, but Little Red Bicycle doesn’t have a booth this year. I think they have been wholesaled by a vendor, but this is not a booth that they are paying for, and they probably don’t deserve to be blacklisted because someone else brought their yarns with them.

From inquiring with Alpenglow, the sale basket are yarns that have already been marked down as discount items, and there will be a discount on those yarns throughout the weekend (30% Thursday, 20% the rest of the weekend). For most of those skeins it’s less than dollar or so of a difference, if even. I don’t see how that says that they see customers on one night (with very low traffic) as more valuable than any other day? They look like they’re having sale basket yarns out for the entire weekend.

Just letting you know, in case you hadn’t realized it.

    • It says: “We at Alpenglow Yarn and Ranch of the Oaks, also featuring yarn from Little Red Bicycle, booth 1048 (in the back) will have a couple of promotions: [….]”

Most of the time I see “featuring”, it is on music videos when that means the featured person takes center stage and has a lot of creative input.

Your interpretation of the phrasing is, no doubt, correct since you are very closely associated with Little Red Bicycle.

“Alpenglow” is the Rav user who started the entire thread, which is called “Thursday night specials!”

The prices are different if you pay more for your Stitches tickets. (You must take a class, at least a market session, to attend the market on Thursday night.) It’s fine for people to choose to shop there when it is not during the sale, but they should know other people got better prices and better selection.

The difference might be “less than a dollar or so” but it is 28% more to buy from the Alpenglow sale basket on Friday when the sale basket is merely 10% off compared to the 30% off on Thursday. That is a steep penalty to buy out of a selection that has already been picked over.

Most people who are not going on Thursday will not read the thread to realize they are paying more at these vendors and that the prices are obviously flexible if you are special enough.
